There is nothing more important than brushing your teeth regularly, followed by flossing and keeping up with your twice a week dental visits. Brushing and flossing would keep the bacteria away, but minimally only. Only a visit to your dentist would make the teeth absolutely clean and hygienic.

Bacteria can stay on the mouth and tongue, and turn to a sticky film-like substance known as dental plaque. With time, dental plaque can harden and form tartar, which is more stubborn than plaque. Removing the tartar requires a visit to the dentist. The tartar can get under the gum line, get stuck to the fillings on your teeth and affect other dental work that you might have done. Plaque is another form of bacteria so eventually, it can damage the tooth enamel, wear it away completely, and form cavities.

Plaque and tartar can be removed with special tools from the dentist’s office, and being rough and porous, they cannot be removed at home. When there is tartar stuck to the teeth, brushing and flossing become ineffective. It is impossible to prevent the plaque from sticking to your teeth if you do not brush/ floss properly.

The foods that you eat and the beverages that you consume contain bacteria and microbes that will stick to the teeth, even the food particles will stick to the teeth and you won’t know it. Eventually, it will turn into progressive gum disease.

The first form of gum disease is known as gingivitis and can be stopped and reversed if detected on time. Regular cleanings with the dentist, followed by brushing and flossing and an antiseptic mouthwash can reverse gingivitis. If ignored, gingivitis would progress into periodontal where the bones that the teeth that hold it in place would be damaged. But that’s not where the misery ends.

Periodontitis would lead to other health conditions like heart disease, digestive problems, respiratory problems and so on.

How you can remove the plaque and tartar

The most effective way of preventing plaque from forming is regular brushing and flossing. Brushing twice a day and flossing once daily is the standard procedure. Follow this up with fluoride-based mouthwash you can see the difference already.

And then you can try some home tips as well. Adding the combination of baking soda and salt would definitely help in removing plaque. And gargling with one tablespoon of salt, two tablespoons of vinegar and four ounces of water.

Oil pulling is also a great option for removing plaque and reducing bacteria build-up. You can either do it with coconut oil or gingelly oil. Swish one of the oils in your mouth for 5-10 minutes and spit it out.

Consuming vitamin C rich foods like tomatoes and strawberries would be effective in removing plaque and bacteria. Figs are also good in preventing bacteria from the mouth.
