Gone are the days when the quip of “smile when you still have teeth” held any meaning. Teeth play a huge role in a person’s confidence and having missing teeth can, understandably, drastically affect a person’s self-esteem. Though dentures and bridges were used for many years, modern dentistry has come up with a better, more permanent solution. Now, with implant treatments, you can easily fix the problems caused by missing teeth.

What are dental implants? Dental implants form the foundation to which artificial teeth are anchored on. A dental implant is a titanium post that acts as a tooth root. Dentists use it to mount replacement teeth or bridge. It is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gum line. Perhaps the greatest advantage of implant treatment is its permanency- unlike dentures, implants do not come loose. Dental implants also do not need to be anchored to other teeth, unlike bridges, which makes them better for oral health in comparison. Some other advantages of dental implants over removable artificial teeth (dentures) include:

• They are more natural and comfortable

• They don’t need to be removed to be cleaned and maintained every night

• They have higher success rates

• They have a decreased risk of developing cavities in nearby teeth

• They are better for chewing, making it easier to eat

• They cause decreased sensitivity in nearby teeth

There are three common types of dental implants- Endosteal, Subperiosteal, and Zygomatic.

o Endosteal Implants:

This is the safest and most common type of dental implants. In this, the implants are placed into the jaw and the false teeth are then fitted on to it. It works for most patients, provided they have a good, healthy jawbone for the post to fuse to.

o Subperiosteal Implants:

This is the second most common type of dental implants. It is an alternative to endosteal implants. This type is preferred by people who do not have enough jawbone for an endosteal implant and they do not want to go through an intensive oral surgery to add bone. In this, the implants are placed over the bone, but under the gums.

o Zygomatic Implants:

These are the most complex and least common type of implants. In this, the implants are placed on the cheekbone rather than the jawbone.

Dentures can act as a replacement for missing teeth, but they can get very messy and cumbersome to maintain. There is also an amount of embarrassment that might arise out of having to use dentures. Keeping all this in mind, implant treatment might be what you need for your missing teeth. Some factors which would help in getting implants include:

• Having a healthy jawbone which has reached full growth

• Having enough bone to fit an implant, or willing to undergo a bone graft to add the necessary bone

• Having healthy oral tissues

• Not being a smoker

Most people with missing teeth can get an implant, the procedure is not too painful. Some have even described it as less painful than a tooth extraction. However, there are certain exceptions that need to be kept in mind. Any pre-existing dental problems need to be resolved before implants can be placed. It is also necessary to have good oral hygiene to keep teeth clean and free of plaque. Smoking has to be avoided because heavy smoking can disturb the healing process. It might affect the success of the implant.
