It is important to learn about the secrets of oral hygiene in order to have healthy gums. Healthy teeth and gums, in turn, will keep other diseases at bay. Good oral hygiene is not just about brushing and flossing, but something more than that.

So, what does having healthy teeth mean?

When you have healthy teeth, your gum stays taut and pink, you can bite strongly, there will be no cavities, your gums won’t bleed and the roots of the teeth stay strong. When you have healthy teeth, your visit to the dentist can be reduced to 2-3 times a year; the visit will be for regular checkups.

To have healthy teeth, you must practice good oral hygiene. If you are generally a healthy person and take no medications for any particular condition, like cancer, diabetes or heart disease, then you can follow all the general rules of oral hygiene at home. If you are taking medication for anything, then it will impact your oral hygiene, so understand your own health first.

Follow good oral hygiene at home

If you have no medical condition,  you can follow these simple tips to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy:

Brush twice a day for 2-3 minutes and spend at least 30 seconds for each quadrant of your mouth. Make sure you cover the surface of the mouth, holding the brush at a 45-degree angle.

Floss once a day, and do it tooth by tooth with patience. Agreed it will take some time out of your busy schedule, but it will make your teeth good and healthy, with plaque out of the way, you don’t have to worry about teeth decay or cavities.

Use a mouthwash to rinse your mouth

After the regular brushing and flossing, use a fluoride-based mouthwash, rinse it around in your mouth, and spit it out.

The job is not over yet…

After using the mouthwash, remember to clean your tongue as well. There will be bacteria in the tongue too so you can either use a tongue cleaner or a piece of floss to scrape the tongue.

You can say you have brushed your teeth well, and you have done your job of maintaining oral hygiene well, if your teeth feel clean, your gums are pink and your breath feels good. Proper brushing will remove all traces of plaque build-up, promoting healthy gums and teeth

Quit smoking

Smoking is a bad habit that can destroy not just your immune system, but your teeth and gums as well. It can accelerate periodontal diseases leading to bleeding and receding gums. If you’ve had a dental procedure then your dentist might ask you to quit smoking for a few days. Follow that, because smoking can change the appearance of your mouth, make it look yellowish and there will be bad breath too.

Put a curb on sugary foods and starches

Too much sugar-based foods, salty snacks and carbonated drinks can affect not just your digestive system and body, but your oral health as well. Sugar plays a crucial role in creating cavities in your mouth, so limit your sugar intake.
