Good oral hygiene is the window to your overall health. When you brush and floss properly, and keep the bacteria under control, your overall health will be good too, because it is through poor oral health that you will get other diseases, especially since there is a connection between your digestive system and your mouth, your respiratory tract and your mouth. When oral hygiene is poor, bacteria multiples, leading to tooth decay, gum diseases and eventually other diseases.

According to Mayo Clinic, studies have been going on regarding a theory that inflammation caused by gum diseases and presence of oral bacteria can lower the body's resistance to infections and might even play a part in HIV/AIDS.

How can you maintain oral hygiene?

Spending a few minutes everyday however busy you are will keep you in good oral health. So brush your teeth every morning and evening and floss afterwards. If you have consumed food that sticks to your teeth, then you have to brush/floss and remove the food particles to ensure they don’t stay in the chew area and breed bacteria. Brushing in the morning, and brushing just before you go to bed is important because both help in removing the plaque that gets accumulated while you sleep and during the day.

Take your time to brush your teeth because it's a chore that cannot be hurried at all. All the plaque must be removed, or they will remain in the teeth and turn to tartar, which can be really very stubborn. This tartar can cause gingivitis, an early form of gum disease. Ignoring gum disease in the early stages can lead to severe forms of periodontitis, and eventually tooth decay and tooth loss.

Flossing should be done in the correct manner, because there will be food particles in the crevices of the gums that need cleaning.

After brushing and flossing, you will have to clean your tongue too. Bacteria can infest your tongue, so unless you clean your tongue, the hygiene wouldn’t be complete. You can use the same brush to clean your tongue after brushing. Use a soft-bristled brush and use a small pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to brush. Brush softly, not aggressively because enamel, the protective covering of the teeth may wear off with a hard brush. Change your brush every 3 months, because your brush has to be really clean.
